How to Hire an Underpayment Analyst
Underpayments are easy to miss because the claim is technically 'paid.' A strong underpayment analyst knows what the organization should have received, compares expected reimbursement to actual payment, isolates the contractual or configuration reason for the variance, and drives recovery at scale. This is analytical recovery work—not generic AR follow-up.
What a Underpayment Analyst Should Own
- Expected reimbursement calculations using contract terms and fee schedules
- Variance detection between expected and actual allowed amounts
- Recovery workflows for contract underpayments, misconfiguration, and payer errors
- Trend analysis by payer, code, facility, provider, and contract
- Feedback to contracting and payer relations when systemic issues recur
The key hiring test is whether the candidate can explain outcomes, not just tasks. Ask what changed because they owned the work: cleaner inventory, faster resolution, lower leakage, better quality, fewer escalations, or a more reliable operating process.
Hiring Scorecard
Use these as evidence-based signals during screening and interviews:
Interview Questions That Reveal Real Competency
Look for contract/version/effective date, code/utilization, billed charge, expected allowed calculation, remittance, modifiers, and claim attributes.
Strong answers move from claim examples to population analysis, common contract logic, total exposure, and repeatable evidence.
Expect lesser-of logic, bundling, missing modifiers, incorrect coding, patient responsibility, contract exclusions, or wrong expectation model.
Look for total exposure, recurrence, appeal windows, confidence in expected reimbursement, and payer responsiveness.
Compensation Context
Use local market data, role scope, setting, specialty complexity, credentials, and management responsibility to set the final range.
Red Flags to Screen Out
- Treats every variance as a payer error
- Cannot explain expected reimbursement methodology
- Does not validate contract effective dates or versions
- Works claim-by-claim without measuring population exposure
- Cannot distinguish billing/coding error from contract variance
