How to Hire a Charge Capture Specialist
Charge capture is the bridge between care delivered and revenue recorded. A strong specialist knows where charges originate, how they flow through interfaces and the CDM, how to reconcile expected activity to posted charges, and when a missing charge reflects a deeper workflow problem. Speed matters, but completeness and compliance matter more.
What This Role Should Own
- Reconcile clinical activity to posted charges using defined source reports
- Identify missing, delayed, duplicate, or incorrect charges
- Follow up with clinical departments on incomplete documentation or charge entry
- Monitor charge lag and recurring leakage patterns
- Support charge-master, interface, and workflow corrections
Hiring Scorecard
Interview Questions That Reveal Real Competency
Look for source schedule/procedure logs, expected charge components, documented implants/supplies/services, posted charges, an exception list, and owner follow-up.
Strong candidates connect lag to claim delay, period close, revenue recognition, timely filing, and operating defects.
Expect workflow/root-cause review, education, automation or hard-stop options, monitoring, and escalation.
Look for documentation support, billing rules, compliance review, and clear controls.
Compensation Context
Final compensation should reflect local market, setting, scope, credentials, and complexity.
Red Flags to Screen Out
- Only knows manual charge entry, not reconciliation
- Cannot explain charge lag
- Fixes missed charges without addressing source workflow
- Has no compliance awareness
- Relies on memory rather than defined reconciliation sources
