What is Revenue Cycle Management?

Revenue cycle management is the financial process that healthcare organizations use to track patient care encounters from registration and appointment scheduling all the way through final payment. The cycle covers seven core stages: pre-registration, insurance verification, charge capture, coding, claim submission, payment posting, and denial management & AR follow-up. Every stage is interconnected — errors at the front end create denials at the back end, and denials left unworked become bad debt.

RCM is a $250B+ industry within the broader $4.5T U.S. healthcare market. Health systems, physician groups, dental organizations, behavioral health providers, and hospital-at-home programs all depend on effective revenue cycle operations to stay financially viable. The demand for skilled RCM professionals has grown consistently, driven by increasing regulatory complexity, payer policy changes, and the expansion of value-based care contracts.

RCM jobs are among the most remote-friendly in healthcare. The majority of billing, coding, denial management, prior auth, and AR roles can be performed fully remotely — making RCM one of the few clinical-adjacent career paths that offers genuine location flexibility. Entry-level roles are accessible with an associate degree and a certification; senior and leadership roles command salaries that rival many clinical positions.
